Bringing back this drawing for June. Happy Orca Month and Happy Pride! Scientists are hard at work to figure out ways to keep coral reefs alive. Some are looking at the genes of the corals to find ones that are disease resistant. Some are looking at the microbiomes within the coral. Others are working out the best ways to grow baby corals in labs, like the one in this animation, and then plant them out on dying reefs. Coral bleaching is an event that is happening worldwide. Corals are a unique animal that partners with algae to get the nutrients it needs. The algae feeds the coral, and the coral provides a safe home for the algae. The algae is also what gives corals their vibrant colors. A Coral Reef Tale is out for the world to see! You can read the full comic in PDF form on my website, or you can read the phone-formatted version on Webtoon, where episodes are released weekly over the next month. A year ago I was awarded a fellowship from @wdhof to go learn about the struggles and successes of coral reefs in our changing world, and then to draw about it for all of you! "It feels like magic all the time when I'm there... but it's even cooler that it's not! It's even cooler that it's real!" -@dr.kelpy Me: "What is your favorite wetland?" How many parrotfish is too many parrotfish? “Ocean acidification, it’s the other side of climate change” - @quasunellamanda
